Miva Merchant is a shopping cart application, which is a type of software that allows websites to sell goods and services online. Technology
Miva Merchant was developed with a proprietary scripting language known as MivaScript. Historically the language was called htmlscript, and was developed by Joe Austin and others in the mid 1990s. MivaScript is loosely based on XML, with control structures resembling HTML tags (such as <MvIF> to begin an if statement). Miva Merchant used to exclusively use DBF files for data storage. However, with the advent of Miva Merchant 5, the shopping cart gained a significant advantage by incorporating the ability to store data in MySQL. The result was a faster and more robust package. Currently Miva Merchant 5 is the latest version available, although a newer released tagged 5.5 is undergoing beta testing. Features
Out of the box, Miva Merchant 5 supports a number of enterprise-level features. These include a catalog (i.e products and categories), price groups, availability groups, integration with a number of payment processing gateways, integration with FedEx, UPS, and USPS for shipping calculations, customer accounts, product search, page templating, and more. The most important feature, however, is that Miva Merchant boasts a full-fledged API, that allows developers to extend the platform to meet almost any requirement. The Miva Merchant application has changed hands twice over the last few years. In 2004, the PPC search engine company FindWhat purchased Miva Merchant from the original owners. They rebranded the company as MIVA, Inc, and then resold the shopping cart and related businesses to private investors, under the company name Miva Merchant, in late 2007. |
